The Mega Site For Crossband Downloads

An insight into a small group of Radio Hams in Melbourne who (since the 1970's) have conducted rambling and inane conversations until the early hours of the  morning via complex multiplex radio connections that even the Oz Govt Radio Authorities have yet to figure out.

As it is simpler to do and more colourful

Mr knock Guest Announcer

          Prime Minsters

More Australian History and other stuff from Mr Mumbles. (who was Mr Mumbles?)

          The Dismissal

Mr Mumbles was at Parliament House in 1975 and saw Mr Whitlem Dismissed and also he met Bob Hawk on the plane.

          Evens Cord

Mr Bek and Stu playing around with a home made disc recording cut on a Presto machine of off air recordings of ABC breakfast man Peter Evens.

          Original Henry Tapes

Henry set up the first radio network for the Fire Brigade in the 1930's and VKN8 was broadcast all around Melbourne on 1655Khz. When he retired he came on 160 meters. Unfortunately some teenagers used to listen in and cause all sorts of trouble.

          Chicko Rolls

Mr Branch deciding what to eat from the fridge.

          Justus on light

Justus on lightbeamish coms (sounds like a carbon telephone)with the Stu and Bek. 1976

Mr Bernard with the Egg and Branch. 1975ish

          Plan B

          Pulse Party OB The Uninvited

This is an attempted outside broadcast from an exclusive Party that we were NOT invited to. (66min  33meg)

          Pirate Tales2

A few weeks latter a sequel to Pirate Tales was broadcast. This is IN STEREO so have both speakers working. i have lost the original WAV file so down converting the mp3 and monoising it looses quality. (76min  71meg)

          Pirate Tales

The dark side of radio. From those that were there, 27 Megs in Melbourne during the 1970"s the raids and broadcasts and lots of illegal activities. Most of this i did not know as i had lived a very sheltered life and thought that what went on on 160 was bad at least no one got shot!.This and other interesting subjects included. From 2009 and one of the best of the modern period. This crossband was almost lost as the file was accidentally erased and the analogue tape backup machine was slipping so it is made up from various other recordings so the quality is a bit strange at times. This will not appear on the podcast site as i do not remember how to do them and it is years since i put one up and does anyone still listen to podcasts? (151min  50meg)

Hear the original BBBill Ceivers the man that made his own valve (8min  1meg)

          Can You Speek

         You're So Vain

            The title says it all.

         SickOf Missions

Played this recently on air and i have not heard it for a while but it is in the classic class, stu moaning about being sick of the missions after being
on for 4 years.I think this would date back to about 1979. Quality is not the best as it is an of air recording and
we thought it was not being loged but maybe that is why it is as good as it is.

Branch,Bek,and Stu missions from mid 70's. Bit of a rip off of Ms V White from the department (19min  8meg)

            Bottle Beacon

Early Stu Bek missions from 1975 discussing amongst other things the beacon on the mouth of the Elwood
canal (It used to transmit on the 160 band and sounded like a bottle pouring) (27 min 11meg)

            Babbage BOCP

While doing a BOCP of the air the Mr k gets talking about Babbage and early putors (29 min 12meg)

            Vkc 1984

VKC (the Melbourne Police Dpt)  have  gone  digital  encrypted,  so you can't  listen to  them  any more.  All the
news rooms must now be very quiet  without the continuious babble  from the police scanners . Anyhow here is
a recording from 1984 before they were even on the UHF repeater network. This is from the old VHF simplex  (168Mhz)
system  and although you can hear most cars some are in the noise or not there at all , the main thing is how clear the audio
is compared to the more recent  systems and they seem to be a lot more laidback.

The Real  Second Last Branch Missions   29/10/04

On going through my discs i found a missions i had forgotten about , this is the first time the Branch came on via Skype
and was  the second last time he appeared . It is quite long and has a few good bits.

          The Last Branch Missions   19/11/04

This is the last Branch missions i am sad to say as he died in June 2006
Mr Branch was last on air from his Park St station in 1980 . Occasionally he could be convinced to come on a live crossband
and this is a record of the last time it happend in November 2004. The Branch was on via Skype and the Wick on Eccolink

           2nd Last Branch Missions

This is the second last Branch missions from Oct 2003 and was the
first time he was on since 1998. Incomming audio was via netmeeting
and as you will hear the quality is no way as good as Skype. Dallas and
the Bek join latter on. All these recent  missions have not been put up before as
frankly i did not concider them all that interesting, but now as they are the last in a
long line there is some appeal.

           3rd Last Branch Missions

Last in the 1998 series from September that year, a Branch, Stu, Egg missions.

           4th Last Branch Missions

Egg, Stu and the Branch  again from 1998.

           5th Last Branch Missions

The first of the New Branch series from 1998 via a UHF link i gave him but it did
not gain his interest as there was only three missions and we had to
wait till 2003 till the next apperence.

          Last Park St Xband

The last real Branch missions from the Park St studios in
1980 featuring Mr K and the Stu talking about the Newport power station.

         Last Park St Simplex 1980

Final simplex  transmission from the original station with Mr Head and Mr K.
  Xmas Xband

Not Much to do with xmas except it was recorded at xmas 1976. The Head talks about his trip to Alice Springs
and the Stu goes walking about the house with the radio mic, latter the Bek comes on via a tandy phone.  (55 min 24Meg)

up a bit latter on.  1976   (45 min  23 meg)

The Night The Sky Fell In
This podcast is THE NIGHT THE SKY FELL IN recorded the night the skylab crashed. As you will hear people were ringing in to report bright lights in the sky and loud noises but the experts on the ABC were saying that they must be mistaken as the skylab was going to fall safely at sea. Any one who has been to the skylab museum at Esperence in Western Australia can plainly see that a lot of big and heavy stuff did actually fall on the land.

Early Hams
Recordings of Aus hams in the 1940's,Gee they sound like a lot of gerryatrics but the fact is they were young men then. It was just the way people talked at that time (Righto old boy!). I like the bit where the guy says he has worked the band since 1928. Also interesting to hear what their rigs sounded like then. Includes an intorduction from Ivor MOrgan who made the recordings at the start of the file.
